5 Ways I Found More Peace in My Home (And One My Mom Taught Me Early On)

I didn’t always realize how special my home was growing up. It wasn’t the biggest or the most decorated, but there was something deeper in the walls… something steady, something calm. Looking back now, I see that what my parents built wasn’t just a house. She built a place where peace could stay.

Now that I’m older and creating a space of my own, I’ve found myself wanting that same sense of stillness and purpose. I’ve had to learn what actually helps bring that spirit back in. Some of these things surprised me. One of them came straight from my mom.

Here are five simple things that have helped me bring more peace into my own home.

1. I started with prayer, even for my space

I used to think praying was only for big decisions or deep struggles. But I started praying about my home. About the feeling in it. About what kind of spirit I wanted others to feel when they walked in. That small shift changed everything. Peace doesn’t always show up immediately, but when you invite it in, it finds a way.

2. I created a space that pointed me back to Christ

It didn’t need to be fancy. I cleared off one corner of my desk and placed a framed picture of Christ, my scriptures, and a small notebook. That became my quiet space. Even when I’m not sitting there, just seeing it reminds me of who I want to be.

3. I softened the noise

There are so many good things that can fill our homes. Music, podcasts, the news… but I noticed that too much noise made me anxious. I started playing soft instrumental hymns while I cleaned or worked, and the feeling in the room changed. It felt intentional. It felt like home.

4. I simplified what was on my walls

Growing up, my mom had a framed picture of Christ hanging near the entryway. I probably walked past it a hundred times a week, but it’s one of the first things I remember when I think about home. Now that I’ve added Christ-centered art to my own walls, I understand why she did it. It’s not just decoration. It’s a quiet testimony. A reminder that He belongs in every part of our lives, including the living room.

5. I let go of perfection

This one took time. I used to think I couldn’t feel peace until my space looked “put together.” But I’m learning that peace isn’t a result of perfect decor, it’s the result of purpose. A room with intention, even if it’s imperfect, can feel more sacred than a space that looks perfect but says nothing. A painting of the Savior, even if it’s the only thing hung, can change everything.
